How I’m making $3000/Month as a Freelance Writer Living in Asia
With a Macbook and free WiFi connection
I’ve been a freelance technical writer for 3 years.
Working with software companies in the automated web accessibility testing and automation sector.
I’ve written articles ranging from making buttons and drop-downs on websites accessible, to full-fledge coding tutorials on how to run Axe-Core with Java to detect accessibility violations on websites.
With a background in software engineering this was the logical pivot for me.
I found my first client onLinkedIn, he reached out to me after reading one of my Medium articles back in 2022.
And I’m happy that I’m still working with him to this day.
And I’ve been getting dozens of leads and clients every few months.
You might wondering how the heck am I getting so many leads and clients.
Well, it’s not complicated.
Here’s how I’m doing it:
I’m reaching out to companies with Cold DMs and Cold Emails.
This is not ‘Spray and Pray’, I try to target specific companies in specific niches, I’m not reaching out to every single company in the world. (be a sniper, not a machine gunner)
I show them how I can help their website SEO and Google Search ranking, by giving them upfront value as in potential keywords they can target in their niche. (with data!)
I show my expertise in the field as a software engineer with a portfolio of content that talks to them.
And most important of all, the clients I end up working with, I try my best to keep them on a retainer. Meaning they pay me every month for a set amount of Blog articles I write for them. That way I don’t need to keep looking for new clients.
It’s that simple, but remember cold outreach is a numbers game.
Most emails and DMs won’t get you a response, which can be tough mentally.
Then it’s all about following up with them until you get a ‘Yes’ or ‘No’.
There are so many opportunities out there, few freelancers reach out to companies directly with a cold email or a cold LinkedIn DM.
All of them are figthing for pennies on Upwork or Fiverr.
It’s like an untouched goldmine waiting to be discovered.
